Technology Action Plan

industrial-efficiency-2The global industrial base is diverse and expansive—encompassing manufacturing, mining, construction, energy-intensive processes, and other operations that ultimately convert raw materials into finished products. Overall, industry accounts for one-third of the world’s total energy consumption and, as a result, a similar share of the world’s fossil fuel carbon emissions. And while incremental improvements have continuously reduced energy intensity, overall emissions continue to rise due to global industrialization.

Accelerated deployment of energy-efficient industrial technologies and practices has significant potential to reduce carbon emissions while also diminishing other adverse environmental consequences associated with industrial operations; however, unlocking energy efficiency in the industrial sector involves unique challenges. For example, beyond energy-related emissions, there are substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industrial processes.
